Thor: Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi May Helm His Own ‘Star Wars’ Movie

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Taika Waititi has been approached by Disney and Lucasfilm about directing a future Star Wars movie.

Waititi is coming off a hugely successful year with his Oscar-nominated Jojo Rabbit, he also dipped his toes into the Star Wars universe as an actor and director. He helmed the well-received finale of Disney+ The Mandalorian.

The talks are in early stages and it’s not clear what project Waititi would helm. Marvel President Kevin Feige is also developing a new Star Wars movie, so perhaps the plan is for the two of them to work together, but that is mere speculation.

Disney CEO Bob Iger previously said Star Wars feature films would go “into a hiatus” after the release of The Rise of Skywalker. This would give Lucasfilm the time to plan their next move thoroughly instead of delivering the likes of the rushed conclusion of the nine-film Skywalker saga.

For the time being Waititi has his hands full with Thor: Love and Thunder and he’s still attached to Warner Bros. Akira movie, however that could change depending on the outcome of his Star Wars talks.

Taika did take to Twitter and posted an image of Fleetwood Mac’s album cover Rumours, trying to downplay the report. But we shall see where this goes, it’s been known for actors and directors to distance themselves from reports until the deal is sealed.
