Today it was reported by Variety that director Cathy Yan has been tapped to direct the much talked about Birds of Prey film.
Yan, a former Wall St. Journal reporter only made her debut as a filmmaker at this years Sundance festival with Dead Pigs, and now she’s bagged her first big studio gig. Yan will be the first Asian American to direct a DC Comics movie and the third female director in the DC Extended Universe.
She joins Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins and Ava DuVernay who was recently announced as the director of New Gods, which is in development.
Birds of Prey will center around a number of female heroes from the comics of the same name and will feature the return of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
In addition to starring in the film, Robbie will produce with her LuckyChap production company along with Sue Kroll’s, Kroll & Co Entertainment and Bryan Unkeless of Clubhouse Pictures.
Christina Hodson script supposedly blew away the Executives at Warner Bros. Hodson has also been tasked with penning the Batgirl script after impressing the studio.
It had been rumored that Warner Bros. had been weighing several options for the Harley Queen character, one of them being her return in Suicide Squad sequel which is to be directed by The Accountant’s Gavin O’Connor.
With the announcement of the Birds of Prey film, it’s uncertain whether Suicide Squad will begin shooting later in the year like previously reported or be pushed back to make way for the female heroes of DC Comics.
The script is still being worked on, and Yan will take over once it’s been finalized. Production will begin at the end of the year once Margot Robbie is finished filming Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
