As you may already know, there’s a scrappy, lethal ensemble of Gotham rogues and DC bad guys returning to the big screen in the next couple of years. Suicide Squad 2 is the sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad. Ayer was the writer/director of the original, and Gavin O’Connor is set to co-write/direct Squad 2. In addition to the directorial change for the sequel, Task Force X has reportedly brought on some new writing blood as well.
Per, The Hollywood Reporter David Bar Katz and Todd Stashwick are co-writing the script for the Squad sequel alongside director Gavin O’Connor. Prior to the news of Katz and Stashwick signing on as co-writers, the only other co-writer listed for Squad 2 was Legend of Tarzan‘s Adam Cozad. THR talks about the writing backgrounds of the Squad sequel’s new writers:
“Katz is known for his Black List script The Man in the Rockefeller Suit, and has multiple features in development, including Chasing Phil with Robert Downey Jr.’s Team Downey and Warner Bros. He also has comic book experience, performing a rewrite on New Line’s Spawn as well as penning the play The History of Invulnerability, which is about the creation of Superman.”
Katz’ background seems like a good fit for a movie about DC comic super-villains. Spawn also has common ground with the notorious Squad. He too is an antihero. Squad 2 could turn out as a great place for these new writers, to follow the Writing 101 advice, write what you know and write to your strengths.
On Stashwick’s background, THR continues:
“Stashwick comes from the acting world and has worked on Fox’s Batman prequel Gotham, as well as SyFy’s 12 Monkeys. He recently revealed he was working on the Suicide Squad 2 script and describes himself as a lifelong DC fan.”
Both are seemingly a very good fit for the writing staff of Squad 2, with Stashwick as pointed out a self-proclaimed DC fan, and Katz who is writing a play about the creation of Superman means that guy has some serious DC fandom as well.
After the first Suicide Squad earned $746 million worldwide, Warner Bros are eager to get the sequel into production. Let’s hope the DC passion of these new writers, Katz and Stashwick translates into both dollars and a good response from critics for Squad 2.
Stashwick’s involvement was first reported by Popcorn Talks DC Movie News.
