Iconic filmmaker Steven Spielberg is ready to take flight with a brand new feature film: Blackhawk.
Spielberg’s production company Amblin Entertainment will partner with Warner Brothers to produce an adaptation of the classic DC Comics series based on a squadron of WWII fighter pilots. DC has indicated that Spielberg will also likely direct Blackhawk, marking his first DC Universe venture which he’s hoping to direct.
Spielberg, who partnered with Warner Brothers on Ready Player One, stated:
“It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring Ready Player One to the screen. They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on Blackhawk.”
Not only does Ready Player One include a plethora of cameos from DC characters (including Batman, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, etc.), the film is both a critical and commercial hit. Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman Toby Emmerich said:
“We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure. We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing Blackhawk to movie audiences worldwide.”
David Koepp, the screenwriter behind Jurassic Park, will write a screenplay for the film. Kristie Macosko Krieger will co-produce the film alongside Spielberg, with Sue Kroll executive producing.
The comic book series ‘Blackhawk’ centers around the titular character Blackhawk, the commander of Blackhawk Squadron. Debuting in 1941 during the Golden Age of comics, the pilots commonly fought Axis powers, but the group has also been adapted for modern stories against other villains.
It is unclear when the film will enter production, but considering Spielberg’s involvement with Indiana Jones 5 and West Side Story, it could be a while before we see the action flick roll into theaters. It is also currently unknown just how connected this film will be to the DCEU as a whole.
