Coming off of making Oscar history by being the first British woman to be nominated for the best director award for Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell is to pen the script for the DC’s Zatanna movie.

Zatanna will finally be making her big-screen debut in a standalone film. Serinda Swan played the character previously on TV during Smallville’s run in the noughties.

There is no word on whether Fennell will direct the project. J.J Abrams Bad Robot Productions will produce the film alongside Warner Bros. DC Films division as part of his deal with WarnerMedia to develop Justice League Dark characters.

Zatanna is the latest DC project to be announced, and it joins the slate of films which includes Blue Beetle, Wonder Woman 3, and the untitled Superman movie that are all in different stages of development.

Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson created Zatanna Zatara in the ’60s. She is the daughter of magician Giovanni John Zatara. Zatanna, the Mistress of Magic inherited her father’s abilities and after he vanished, taught herself how to get access to her power by speaking her spells backwards.

Are you excited to see Zatanna finally getting her shot at a feature film? Who would you cast? Let us know in the comments section below or via our socials!
