Oscar Isaac Joins Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’

Oscar Issac

That Was Fast

3 Months ago, Oscar Isaac said he was going to be spending time with family and rest from acting. Today, we learn that he’s going to be in Denis Villeneuve’s new Sci-Fi thriller, Dune. He will join Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, and Charlotte Rampling. Oscar Issac is maybe the most sought after actor in Hollywood today. He has already worked with most of Hollywood’s elite directors. Seeing him joining Dune as Chalamet’s father seems like a perfect casting choice.

Isaac will be finishing his 3rd film in the Star Wars franchise before joining the Dune production. Once he joins Denis, however, he’ll be in a very different universe about family legacy and evil emperors. With everything Denis has said so far, this is easily becoming one of my most anticipated films for 2020.

“Most of the main ideas of Star Wars are coming from Dune so it’s going to be a challenge to [tackle] this. The ambition is to do the Star Wars movie I never saw. In a way, it’s Star Wars for adults. We’ll see.”

Those Unfamiliar

Preserving the original story he’s wanting to tell, Dune will be split into two films. In the far future, humanity has eschewed advanced computers in favor of adapting their minds to be capable of extremely complex tasks. To facilitate the mind, a rare spice, Melange, is harvested on the planet Arrakis. It also improves health by extending life. Melange is also the planet’s currency in the interstellar empire. A Great House rules each planet and owes allegiance to the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV.

Atreides, the Great House that governs the planet Arrakis is contested among opposing noble families. After Duke Leto Atreides (Isaac) and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship with nature. So Paul, his son, leads a rebellion to restore his family’s reign and destroy the ruthless intergalactic dictator. Sound familiar?
