Joaquin Phoenix has been rumored to star in director Todd Phillips untitled standalone Joker origins film for a while now and since it was reported a few months ago, there has been no further development in the casting.
Now the team over at Fandango got the chance to speak with the actor during the promotional tour for his new film You Were Never Really and asked him point blank if he was going to play the Clown Prince of Crime.
Phoenix, who reportedly had a mischievous grin replied:
“I don’t know… it could be an interesting character, I don’t know.”
The acclaimed actor didn’t express any interest in being in a comic book movie, however, it seems that’s because he’s never been given an interesting enough role for him to dive into.
“I see it as any other movie, I wouldn’t say… ‘I won’t do Westerns.’ It depends on what it is. I don’t really care about the genre, I care about the character and the filmmaker. If you have the ability to transcend the genre, then that’s what you want to do. So I wouldn’t say, hands down, no – I wouldn’t do that kind of movie.”
Phoenix didn’t sound sour on the idea of being in a superhero movie, having previously been offered the roles of Bruce Banner/Hulk in Avengers and Doctor Strange, he continued by saying:
“There are things where I’ve flirted with the possibility where there was the potential for this to be… something that’s actually interesting to me. But then for whatever reason, they never got to that place where everyone else feels the same way. And that’s key. Everyone has to want to explore the same thing or else it just doesn’t f-cking work. I’m not opposed to it. I don’t make decisions on budget or things like that – it’s really the filmmaker and the character.”
I don’t know about you, but I would love to see Joaquín as the Joker, let’s hope we get an official announcement soon.
