Filming on DC’s Birds of Prey set to commence in January, Warner Bros. has now turned their attention filling out the roles of the Harley Quinn lead team.
With Margot Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn, she will be joined by Black Canary, Huntress, Rene Montoya, and Cassandra Cain who will go up against Batman villain Black Mask.
Casting is now underway and Warner Bros. is looking for diverse talent for the roles of Black Canary, Huntress and Rene Montoya. Now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed names of the actresses who have tested for the parts.
Up for the role of Black Canary are Gugu Mbatha-Raw (A Wrinkle in Time, Cloverfield Paradox), Jurnee Smolett-Bell (Friday Night Lights, Underground) and Janelle Monae (Hidden Figures, Moonlight).
Black Canary is a superhero vigilante who fights crime using martial arts and a sonic scream attack. She is one of the greatest fighters in the DC Universe, and also a strong tactical mind. Her costume is an attractive black outfit with fishnet stockings and blonde hair, and she is usually seen riding her motorcycle. Dinah Laurel Lance was born into a family of crime fighters. Her father Larry Lance, was a police officer, while her mother (also named Dinah) was the original Black Canary. Green Arrow fights alongside her most often as they are romantically involved. She has been a member of the Justice Society, the Justice League, Team Arrow and the Birds of Prey.
For the role of Huntress Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers, The Nice Guys), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, Fargo) and Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror, How I Met Your Mother).
Huntress is a devout Catholic Italian-American known as Helena Bertinelli, the orphaned daughter of a murdered mafia family who grew up swearing deadly vengeance on the criminal underworld. Batman has frowned on her for her willingness to kill, although over time she has gotten used to more conventional methods of crime-fighting and found wider acceptance as a vigilante. The character has been a member of Infinity, Inc., the Justice Society, the Justice League, Birds of Prey, the Outsiders and Checkmate.
For Rene Montoya, Justina Machado (One Day at a Time, Jane The Virgin) and Roberta Colindrez (I Love Dick, Vida) have tested for the role.
Renee Montoya is a detective working for the Gotham City Police Department underneath Commissioner Gordon who frequently allies herself with the vigilante Batman and his associates. Her most regular partner was Crispus Allen. She is openly lesbian and has had relationships with Kate Kane and Daria Hernandez. Following the death of her mentor Vic Sage during 52 she takes on a costumed identity, becoming the Question in efforts to eliminate the Religion of Crime. She is a member of Batman Incorporated and the Global Peace Agency.
Warner Bros. is still on the lookout for of Cassandra Cain, the studio is looking for an Asian actress who can play the role of a 12-year-old. Cain is a mute assassin, who fails to cope with the demands of normal society.
