With the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League last week, many are eager to see how it did. And while HBOMAX and WB haven’t released a statement on it’s performance, 3rd party analysts have shared their findings. And it’s pretty interesting. Here’s what they’ve discovered.
Per Deadline, they relayed the reports from Samba TV stating that Zack Snyder’s Justice League “drew 1.8M HBO Max households in its first five minutes over its premiere weekend of March 19-21.” This puts Zack Snyder’s Justice League ahead of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which debuted that same weekend. And was said to be Disney plus’ most watched premier ever. Beating WandaVision and The Mandalorian.
But interestingly enough when compared to HBOMAX’s own traffic, it trailed behind Wonder Woman 1984. Which drew 2.2M U.S. households on the streamer over Dec. 25-27.
I found this data to be interesting, because it didn’t support my own experience. That isn’t to say it’s wrong, but given these are 3rd party reports, I find their criteria to be interesting. For example, Zack Snyder’s Justice League debuted on March 18th, and according to their findings, they counted from the 19th to the 21st. Which would naturally excluded it’s most watched day. But there’s also a chance that was a typo. And if so, that’s fine. I can see Wonder Woman 1984 outperforming the Snyder Cut for a few reasons. One being, the Snyder Cut is a four hour movie that is sold as an alternate cut of an already universally hated film. Secondly, Wonder Woman 1984 came out around the Holidays, so it had a lot of cross promotion.
But what I did find interesting about how their findings were stated is the fact that they talk about how much viewers watched the first 5 minutes. And when it comes to the Snyder Cut being a 4 hour film, I feel like many people waited for an opportune time to watch it all in one sitting. And there’s data that seems to support this.
According to TV Time, they’re reporting that not only was Zack Snyder’s Justice League the most watched film of that weekend, but just 3 days after its release, it’s tracking 35% higher than Wonder Woman 1984 when it comes to audience demand. And is even tracking higher than Godzilla vs Kong and Mortal Kombat, which are also set to release on HBOMAX simultaneously. And on top of that, Diesel Labs reports that Zack Snyder’s Justice League nearly doubled the engagement of Wonder Woman 1984 on the day of its release.

So with that, what can we conclude on the success of the Snyder Cut? Especially when compared to Wonder Woman 1984? Did Wonder Woman 1984 outperform it? Well, it seems that way. And although no official HBOMAX sources have reported anything, these other reports point to interesting findings. It seems that as far as the highest watched thing on HBOMAX goes, Wonder Woman 1984 is still Queen. But as far as popularity, Zack Snyder’s Justice League seems to be dominating a lot more conversation.
And it’s important to note, Wonder Woman 1984 was a dual release and is no longer on HBOMAX. So it makes sense that many people would flock to HBOMAX to watch that. Especially during the height of the pandemic. But Zack Snyder’s Justice League is an HBOMAX exclusive and will be on the service forever. So it’s success wont count on the initial numbers it brought in on it’s opening weekend, but the numbers and loyal subscribers it will produce in the months to come…
