With the Arrowverse shows back in full swing on the CW, we’ve finally been able to see our favorite television heroes suit back up on the small screen.
As the seasons progress, filming is underway for this year’s crossover, which already promises to be intriguing. The three night event will be titled Elseworlds, and will see the both the introduction of Ruby Rose’s Batwoman and the return of Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman.
Fans will remember Hoechlin’s brief time on Supergirl in the beginning of the second season. Received positively as both Superman and Clark Kent, fans have been eagerly anticipating his return. It seems that he will not only feature in this year’s crossover, but that he will play a large part. Even more exciting is that he’s not coming alone. The addition of Grimm star Elizabeth Tulloch as reporter Lois Lane will see the iconic couple reunited on the small screen.

It was recently reported by FandomWire that the crossover event will potentially serve as a backdoor pilot to a Superman series, akin to what is being planned for Batwoman. Essentially, executives at the CW would be looking closely at how fans respond to Hoechlin and Tulloch’s characters during Elseworlds. As great as this rumor was, it was debunked quicker than you could say Smallville.
While it would be fun to explore the world of Superman further, could a Superman and Supergirl series both succeed next to each other on the same channel without taking away from one another? That’s for fans to decide! All we can say for sure is that if it where to happen we’d be excited to see Hoechlin back as the Man of Steel and can’t wait for a bold and inspiring performance from Tulloch.
In other related new, it looks like Superman’s greatest foe is heading to the CW as well. While not set to make an appearance during Elseworlds, Lex Luthor will make his CW debut this season on Supergirl. His role will be recurring and casting is set to begin soon. The Luthor family is no stranger to the show. Lena plays an important role as a renowned scientist, director of L-Corp, friend of Kara, and love interest of James Olsen. Her mother Lillian was a leading antagonist with Cadmus during the second season. It is currently unclear what circumstances will bring Lex on to the show and how it will affect Kara’s relationship with Lena.
Executive Producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller said, “We’re beyond excited to introduce iconic villain, Lex Luthor, to Supergirl and to weave him into our story this season. We’ve talked about having Lex on the show since its inception and we’re excited to have him finally arrive. We can’t wait for him to shake things up in National City and watch him go toe to toe with not only Supergirl, but his sister Lena Luthor.”
Supergirl already has her plate stacked fighting Agent Liberty and the Graves siblings, with Manchester Black and a duplicate Kara Zor-El on the horizon sure to complicate her life further. With Luthor tacked on, it’s a tall order of crimefighting for the Girl of Steel. Maybe she’ll call in her cousin for an assist. After all, National City may need two Kryptonian defenders to make it through this season!
Are you excited to see the return of Superman in this year’s crossover? Lois Lane’s debut? Hoping for a Superman series to be greenlit? Eagerly anticipating the arrival of Lex Luthor? Let us know in the comments!
